The purpose of the Archbishop’s Appeal is to support the mission of the Church. The Archbishop’s Appeal Committee formed in October 2010 has as its first mission the renovation/ restoration of Church buildings with the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception as its main focus.

Last year, I introduced an Annual Archbishop’s Appeal as a permanent part of the financial structure of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain. Time passes very quickly! It is now time for the second year of the Appeal.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
The first Catholic Church in Port of Spain was built in 1781 on the site now known as Tamarind Square. The customary open space the Plaza de Armas, in front of that church is now occupied by the present Cathedral.

An interview with Maureen Downes and Cynthia Major
"I took first communion here at the age of ten,” says Maureen Downes (at right in photo), a proud seventy nine year old. “I was born here, I was baptised here, I did everything here,” adds Cynthia Major who is slightly younger at seventy eight. The lives of these women revolve around the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. As their stifled laughter echo through the empty pews, one gets the impression that they have found the source of some unspeakable joy which they have no intention of giving up. Maureen and Cynthia are drawn to ‘de Cathedral’, not only because of its beauty and grandeur, but because even to this day, they claim, it is the only place they feel at home.
